JP cartons are moving before BP02 lands

Overseas TCG sales are forecast to top 50% of Bushiroad's business for the first time ever, and BP02's real supply lands Oct 30 — right when Magic's own Q4 guidance turns negative and Pokemon's calendar gets crowded. BP01 sealed cartons in Japan ran a $554.17 median across the last 30 days of completed sales (n=76). Narrow to the most recent 7 days and the median jumps to $845.98 (n=16). That's not a clean week-over-week read — the windows overlap, and 16 sales is a thin sample — but the shape is real: JP carton buyers are paying more for the same box right now, with BP02's real supply still eleven weeks out.

That's the number worth sitting with before the macro case, because it's the only one in this post that's actually a receipt and not a forecast. Everything below is Bushiroad telling investors what it expects, or us reading a calendar. This is what a buyer in Japan is doing today.

That supply lands in a specific shape on October 30. BP02 "Legends Awaken" prints 100 card types across RR/R/U/C plus Parallels, seven cards a pack, twelve packs a box, roughly EUR69.90 a box before anyone's local markup. A "Sleeve & Card Set Vol.1" — five exclusive cards — preorders October 2 to warm up the shelf, four weeks ahead of the real flood.

The company's own numbers

Bushiroad's July 30 investor materials name two new overseas subsidiaries this year, Malaysia and China, on a network that already runs seven overseas group companies, and ~400 card shops across 18-plus countries touched by the rollout. The number that matters: Bushiroad is telling investors overseas TCG sales will exceed 50% of its trading-card business for the first time ever, for the fiscal year ending June 2027. Palworld is named in that push. BP01 is the proof of concept behind it — 3.5 million packs sold worldwide as of the July 9 announcement, before BP02 even had a date — with organized play now scaling to match: regional qualifiers this fall, first World Championship at Card Game Festival 2027.

Why we like October for this

Here's the read, not Bushiroad's: Magic just posted a real quarter, revenue up 32% year over year and past $500M for a single quarter for the first time — but Hasbro guided mid-single-digit Q3 growth for it, then a low-single-digit Q4 decline. Pokemon's first-ever simultaneous global set, the 30th Anniversary drop, eats the shelf through mid-September and clears out just before BP02 ships. One Piece is the one actually gaining ground on both of them right now, outselling a Big Three member for a second straight quarter, and Palworld still isn't on TCGplayer's Q1 2026 GMV board at all. BP02 is the set built to change that.

What it means for what's in your binder

We read it this way: Bushiroad's own numbers say the overseas push is real, and BP02 lands in a window we think favors it — Magic's guidance cooling into Q4, Pokemon's anniversary spike clearing out beforehand. That's our inference, not a stated plan; the IR deck never mentions a competitor by name. If we're right, the eleven weeks between now and October 30 are the window where BP01 supply is genuinely scarce and BP02 hasn't hit shelves yet — which is exactly what the JP carton median above is showing. If we're wrong, or Bushiroad simply picked the date its printers had open, BP02's own supply just resets the floor and this quarter's read doesn't hold up. Either way, it isn't something a press release can settle — only what actually clears next.
